Introducing Workstreams: A New Era Of Execution For The Livepeer Project

Hi everyone,

With the publishing of the Tactical Recommendations, the strategy-setting phase of the Advisory Boards is now complete. The Livepeer Foundation (LF) is now deep into the process of synthesizing the Advisory Board outputs and crafting the roadmap for the next chapter of the Livepeer project.

To start this process, the LF has created a first attempt at sizing and scoping the Advisory Boards’ recommendations into different ambitions, around which groups of core contributors can form to accelerate the Livepeer project along the roadmap.

Each of these ambitions form workstreams. These workstreams - each with their own roadmap - will become the easiest and most efficient way for contributors to find out what is being done, how to participate and how to measure impact across the ecosystem.

Their aim is to focus core contributors on the most critical challenges Livepeer faces and provide a new effective structure to accelerate the Livepeer project towards our shared goals.

This post will lay out how workstreams carry the work of the advisory boards from strategy-setting into the execution stage, as well as how we propose to structure the coming changes to the ecosystem.

A new era of coordinated, aligned execution

Last year, Livepeer co-founder Doug Petkanics laid out Cascade, his strategy for Livepeer Inc to become the leading real-time video AI community and platform.

This vision brought in a huge wave of energy, talent and ideas. A year on, with the launch of Daydream, development of Comfystream and the onboarding of Orchestrators to real-time video AI, significant strides have been made towards this vision.

Concurrently, the Livepeer Foundation has been created to steward the Livepeer project through this critical juncture and into an unparalleled phase of transformation, innovation and sector dominance.

And the timing could not be better.

Capital is ready to be deployed from the treasuries. Demand for real-time AI is increasing. Contributors have been funded through SPEs. Our dedicated community is poised to contribute and our decentralised network of AI-ready GPUs is in a unique position to capture a huge addressable market.

The missing piece in the puzzle: an aligned strategy with coordinated execution.

Through the Livepeer Foundation and the hard work of the Advisory Boards, the network finally has the long-term strategic vision. Now, we will walk you through the coordination mechanism to move fast and make the changes needed for long-term success.

It is finally the moment to move past strategy setting and into execution.

Introducing Workstreams

The Livepeer Foundation is preparing the next major phase of work: a clear execution plan, a proposed ecosystem budget, and a funding proposal that will support the next wave of contributors, teams, and projects.

To achieve the next phase of execution, the LF has built on the work of the Tactical Recommendations to identify the following core ambitions:

  • A leading, globally-recognised brand for video & AI infrastructure.

  • A community of high-value builders to generate demand through new applications.

  • A coordinated project roadmap attracting high performing talent.

  • The network’s intelligence layer within a best-in-class Explorer.

  • Awareness around the economic opportunities of participating in Livepeer.

  • A secure, adaptable core protocol with a unified developer experience.

  • The leading real-time video AI platform and community.

  • A high-performance, dynamic compute marketplace.

  • An actively-managed treasury to fund new opportunities.

To structure this work, we’re forming Workstreams, each with a specific ambition.

Each workstream is a collection of tasks around a specific focus. These workstreams will be structured across three phases: Now (H2 2025); Next (H1 2026); Beyond.

With workstreams, it should become clearer how everyone from builders, to core contributors and community members new and old can participate.

Our hope is that these workstreams open the door to the community to contribute and leave their mark on the future of Livepeer.

Up Next: Fund Workstreams to Accelerate the Livepeer Project

We’re excited to finally be able to share this new framework with you, as well as to execute on the AB’s recommendations that will bring Livepeer into a new era of innovation, coordination and utility.

The changes coming in the next few months will fundamentally reshape the ecosystem and, for the first time, provide clear contribution pathways for a strategic roadmap co-created by the community.

But these changes will require new teams, tools, incentives and a solid financial foundation upon which to start building the future of Livepeer.

That’s why the Livepeer Foundation will soon be submitting a proposal to steward many of the above workstreams and execute effectively on the roadmap.

Within the proposal, there will be further details of each workstream, including a budget, milestones, ownership and future opportunities.

This fresh funding will act as the financial engine for this next chapter of the project, with opportunities for existing and new community members to contribute effectively through bounties, RFPs and more.

Together with the upcoming roadmap, we’ll put together a pre-proposal that will have more information about budget, milestones and opportunities for each workstream. As with this document, there will be the chance for feedback prior to formally submitting the full proposal.

RFC: Give Your Feedback

Feedback from core contributors is critical to ensure that what we have proposed is in line with general expectations. We therefore request feedback from core contributors by EoD Monday 18th August.

The primary question we would like feedback on is: what would you add, remove or amend to individual workstreams?

We want to ensure that all voices have an opportunity to participate in the process and to check any blind spots that we may have. If you are fully aligned with the above, please like or comment to show support!

As a note: that LF’s work is one of synthesis. We fully acknowledge that difficult decisions have to be made when prioritising, particularly around what is left out or deprioritised. There are therefore no guarantees that your feedback will be integrated into the final version of the roadmap.

We look forward to hearing from you and taking the next, exciting step forward!

Thanks in advance.

Rich, Ben, Rick and Joseph.
